7 | Binge Watching
Lately, I have noticed binge-watching becoming a big phenomenon, especially for college students. It is something that has become normalized in recent years. Binge-watching used to be something that was done over a weekend or during breaks to spend time watching videos on a platform; however, for most, it has turned into an everyday habit. Even for myself, I am not a big consumer of video media, but I can catch myself endlessly scrolling on platforms such as TikTok or Instagram for hours on end, and before I realize it, it is late at night. The short definition of binge-watching is to watch multiple episodes or movies one after the other.
I think one of the factors that contributes most to binge-watching is the new video platforms that are consistently rising, such as Netflix or Hulu, which make it extremely convenient and give the ability to continue watching one episode after another. Most seasons or episodes are available instantly, which cuts out the wait that most people used to have. Sometimes episodes include cliffhangers, which draw individuals in and cause them to want to watch “just one more episode,” which is something that is always said, but before you know it, hours have passed by.
In my opinion, binge-watching can have some positive aspects. For example, some people may use binge-watching as a time to relax or take a break from everything else in their lives. Sometimes people just need a break and to be able to sit down for a few hours to have a cooling period from their busy lives. Sometimes people also use TV shows and movies as a time to connect with loved ones over a certain topic.
Binge-watching can also be an issue if there is not a balance between that and being productive. It is easy to lose track of time, and the effects of this can be troubling because it can be hard to focus on your biggest priorities or to be more productive. Overall, this can cause issues for physical and mental health if it is not managed well.
Binge-watching can be a positive thing if it is done correctly. It does not have to be avoided, but it also should not be a daily occurrence. Having self-control is the biggest factor in this issue. Binge-watching should be something enjoyable and not something that is hindering your health.
