Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence has become a concerning topic over the past few years. From the amount of natural resources it uses to the growing difficulty of distinguishing what is real from what is fake. AI has rapidly changed the digital world. Just a couple of years ago, it was easy to tell when something was generated by AI. Images and videos often had obvious mistakes, such as misrendered objects or strange looking faces and hands. Now, even I find it difficult to tell whether a video is real or artificially created.

I am not a huge consumer of online videos, but when I do watch them it is usually on platforms like TikTok. On this platform, I have come across many videos that are extremely outlandish or uncanny looking. However, I have also seen videos that appear almost completely realistic, making it nearly impossible to determine whether they are real or not. This raises serious concerns about how easily misinformation or fabricated content could spread online.

Another issue that concerns me is the impact AI may have on traditional art. I worry that this could be the beginning of the decline of true handmade creativity. As someone who has always been passionate about the arts, this is especially troubling. I have participated in music classes and lessons since the sixth grade, so artistic expression has always been important to me. Recently, AI-generated musicians such as Xania Monet have appeared on music charts, sometimes competing with or even surpassing human artists. What makes this even more concerning is that many listeners may not even realize they are supporting an AI-generated performer. Music has traditionally been a way for artists to express genuine emotion and experience, and without that human element it risks losing much of its meaning.

AI-generated art is also becoming more common in everyday places. For example, if someone walks through a store like Hobby Lobby, they may notice a large number of decorative paintings that appear to be AI-generated. This shows how rapidly artificial intelligence has entered many aspects of daily life, often without people fully realizing it.

Education is another area that has been affected by the rise of AI tools. Many students today rely on these systems to complete assignments rather than developing their own ideas and writing skills. Some students struggle to write even a short essay, without assistance. When people stop practicing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, it can contribute to a broader decline in intellectual engagement across society. While AI has the potential to be a genuinely helpful tool, it is often being used in ways that replace effort rather than support learning.

Overall, artificial intelligence is advancing very quickly, and society may not yet fully understand its long-term effects. While it offers many useful possibilities, it is important that people remain aware of how it influences creativity, education, and the information we consume.
