Global Trends

In recent years, trends have been moving faster than ever. With apps like TikTok and Instagram, something can go viral overnight and feel outdated just weeks later. Because of this, people often feel pressure to keep buying new things just to stay relevant. This has led to a culture of overconsumption, where it feels normal to constantly replace items instead of fully using what we already have. Now, a new trend is pushing back against that mindset. It is called underconsumption.

Underconsumption is about using less and being more intentional with what you buy. Instead of constantly shopping for new clothes, makeup, or products, the focus is on reusing, repurposing, and getting the most out of what you already own. It does not mean you can never buy anything. It simply means you think more carefully about when and why you do.

A popular example of this is “Project Pan.” This trend encourages people to use a product all the way until it is completely finished before buying a new one. While that might sound obvious, it actually goes against what we usually see online. Influencers often promote new products all the time, even if they have not fully used the ones they already own. This creates a cycle of buying more than necessary, which leads to a lot of waste.

That waste has become a serious global issue. Landfills are filling up quickly, and many of the items we throw away, especially clothing and plastic packaging, do not break down easily. Fast fashion plays a big role in this problem. People buy cheap clothes, wear them only a few times, and then throw them away. Underconsumption helps reduce this by encouraging people to rewear outfits, donate items, and avoid unnecessary purchases.

There are also personal benefits to this trend. Constantly trying to keep up with what is popular can be stressful and expensive. Underconsumption removes some of that pressure. It allows people to focus more on what they actually like and need instead of what everyone else is buying. It can also help save money and create a more organized and less cluttered lifestyle.

Even though underconsumption is becoming more popular, it is not always easy to follow. We live in a world where ads and trends are everywhere, and it is easy to feel like you are missing out if you do not keep up. Still, more people are starting to realize that constantly buying new things is not sustainable for the environment or for themselves.

Overall, underconsumption is more than just a trend. It represents a shift in how people think about shopping and owning things. By choosing to use less and waste less, individuals can make small but meaningful changes that add up over time.
